![]() Loma or Pico Diego de Ocampo is the summit of the mountain range that occupies the northern part of the island and which stretches from MonteCristi, west, to Nagua, east. Located at the geographical boundaries of the municipalities of San Jose de Altamira, Santiago, and Villa Gonzalez. It is named in honor of the rebel slave or black cimarrón rebelled against the Spanish colonies in the 1500s.
A natural attraction, with a height of 1249 meters above sea level, from where you can have a 360º visual of all the Cibao Valley, part of the northern slope of the Cordillera Central and its peaks, including the Duarte peak, as well as the mountain system of the Septentrional mountain range surrounding it up to the Atlantic Ocean. Likewise, the biodiversity and ecosystems in their environments, including its forest or cloudy manaclar on top, now converted into the protected area, "Natural Monument Pico Diego de Ocampo, promises, along the surrounding communities and their efforts, to become one of the ecotourism destinations of the region. It is since 1995 when begins the development of this as the first ecotourism project of the northern Septentrional mountain range, initiative promoted by the ecological project "La Loma" and the communities represented by the institution “Campesinos por la Loma Diego de Ocampo, Inc.”, who began their activities in communities adjacent to the peak, especially El Ranchito, La Guazumita, Piché, Alto de la Manacla, La Cruz de Altamira, Los Mates, El Limón and Arrenquillo, among others. The project took special importance and growth as a result of unjustified evictions of peasants and entire communities that have been established in the area for more than a century, as pretended by pseudo-ecologist and/or environmentalist groups, as the same peasants denounced.. It is then that both the Council for Sustainable Development and Promotion of Dominican Republic, CONDESPI, and beyond, the Dominican Tourism Organization, ODTS, assume a leading role in supporting the project and communities to develop the local tourism, with the full integration of sustainable productive activities for the benefit of farmers and communities in areas that could have been affected, if those evictions would have been made. Since its beginnings, the project has had the leadership of Mr. Bolivar Troncoso and of Father Fabio Fernandez, with the support of the State Secretariat of Tourism, SECTUR, the Municipal Councils of San Jose Altamira, Villa González and Santiago, as well as cooperative institutions and non-governmental and private sectors. The design of the project concept is based on the sustainable development of the area, creating for the first time in our country the zones or ecotourism municipal districts of Diego de Ocampo, which conform with others, the ecological corridor of the northern Septentrional mountain range. ![]() To have more details about the project, programs, activities, and events related to it, we invite you to search our database at this site by using the words "Diego de Ocampo.
